Yeah if you have really targeted traffic, CPA (affiliate marketing) can potentially earn you far more than a CPC (such as AdSense) or CPM model.
Yes CPa does work great. What you have to do is find the best converting, highest paying CPA offer in the niche your site is about. You can always try to beat up the merchants for higher payouts. My company manages some great CPA offers primiarily through Commission Junction.

CPA stands for Cost Per Action which means that you are paid on a conversion for example if the offer is for a product that requires a sale then you are paid once the sale is made. CPL is short for Cost Per Lead which basically means that you are paid for the lead and it is up to the advertiser to make the sale. A lead can be an Email Address or even a Zip code. CPA offers typically have higher payouts but lower conversion rates while CPL offers have lower payouts but much higher conversion rates. Personally, I like CPL offers because there is less commitment on the part of the website visitor which translates into higher conversion rates. I personally know people who make a very nice living promoting CPL offers only. Heck! I am one of them! I hope that was helpful.
