Anyone have experince with optimizing OScommerce sites?

This is my first dynamic site that I've ever owned so I'm just learning some of the tricks of the lingo. I have currently installed Ultimate SEO Url, meta tag generator, and the sid killer. From what everyone is telling me in the OScommerce forums the only way to totally kill the session ids is by turn cookies on. And I don't want to do that.

Does anyone one else have any pointers on seo with OScommerce? Here's my site www.littlemanpedalcars.com

there's an option in the admin section somehwere to turn off session ids, which is a very good idea, as Google will see it as duplicate content if the same page has differing sids (this is due to the way it deals with query strings)

I'm currently involved in the development of an osCommerce based site, and yes, rewriting is very much possible. But you'll get the best results if you're willing to get your hands a bit dirty in the scripts :) . I haven't found any plugin that could rewrite to specific URL's, derive keywords from the current category's products' descriptions and so on. osCommerce is great for a base, but you'll get the most of it if you do it yourself.

i agree..getting down and dirty with the scripts is a good way to learn..im still learning but enjoying it! :)

we started with a basic white site and optimized it towards the crowd we are selling too..ever since then we have been getting more customers because of the changes.

you'd basically want something like dreamweaver to edit the page scripts..dont use their in store program..they even recommend you dont use it!

    anywho thats my .02 :)

www.jadeddreads.com/catalog if interested in the things we changed..
take care and good luck! :)

There's an seo module out there that works really well. It uses mod rewrite to change the url's to be really descriptive of the page.

Most seo modules will give you url's like: http://www.example.com/cPath/13/5

While it does the job, I see this being much more descriptive to both the search engines and the users: http://www.example.com/dvds/horror/nightmare-on-elm-street.html

It really does output url's like that based on the category, subcategory, and title of the product. I don't remember the exact name or location of the mod, but it is on the oscommerce contributions sections so you should be able to find it.

    Hello,
Theres a version of oscommerce that's already had a lot of modules like mod rewrite added to increase it's search engine friendly-ness called
    .
I've heard some people really rave about it although I've not tried it myself.

I have optimized near 25 websites of oscommerce, and these are well indexed in search engines.

It is easy to get SEO url's (http://www.yourwebsite.com/sony/sony-camera.html) like in the links with product name and category name in the URL and meta titles as well as Google Site Map and Froogle Feed
