Anyone have experience of a site bouncing around?

One of my sites keeps bouncing around from page 4 to 78 or something, and back again. It would be on page 4 for a couple of weeks then BOOM gone again only to return a few days later. This is really annoying as I lose revenue. What do you suggest and why does it do this?

If it's a new site I've seen something like this happening in the first 2 or 3 months. I've had sites be at #4 for a day or so and then jump way back down. The position stabilised after 3 or 4 months to wobbling arounf #3 to #8

Is your site a new site?

Same thing for me - very old site - stayed in Google top 10 for 3 weeks - now back to position 14... I hoped it would stay there for longer.

Had a site slowly move up to position 4 then almost overnight back to page 3. Now has gone up and down on page 2. Domain registered 7 years ago.

Site is 12 months old. Im on page 77 dumped with all the google book sites. Sometimes I would notices it would go from say page 3-9 and vary between, but this is some problem. Someone suggested to just build more links.

My site has been pushed down to page 8 and I used to rank top 10. Never sold a single link on my site. Have no idea what the heck is going :S

I add content regularly which is displayed on the home page too. Is that a bad practice?

Very strange! My main site is ecommerce sales and we will do about $1.25M this year. I have several supporting sites, forums, blogs, etc. One of them has never been treated well by Google at all in organic results and is a PR2. Yesterday I check my main search term (for which I have been #1 for almost 2 yrs) and this site is #2! I keep checking throughout the day and on several different computers, IPs, and browsers. All day long it keeps sliding and finally this morning wasn't even in the top 100. Just now, I go back and check and it is #3 again! I have never seen such a thing but am not complaining!

In other words, will you be penalized for duplicate content? I personally have never worried about that with my blogs. The way I feel about it is Google is smart enough to realize that it is not duplicate content.

yep happens all the time. My advice is keep building backlinks. You site won't remain at a specific ranking for ever and your compeititors will be building more backlinks to push their sites further up SERPS, so you need to do the same.

This has been happening to 2 of my new sites, which I find very annoying. As I too am losing money, they are fairly new tho,so I just hope that by building alot of good backlinks google can bring my websites back to being on the top 10. On one of my websites, I have posted an article, is it possible to find out if it got penalized because of the article? I could always just take it off.But that doesn't explain my other website, as I have it with 100% unique content.

Question, does this happen for ALL NEW WEBSITES, and if so, how do you guys manage to speed up the process of keeping your site stable in Google.

    Thanks!

I went from page 3 to page 6... not terrible because I wasn't getting much traffic anyways, but I did notice a little movement.

This is something that happens to most sites, the only thing you can do is to build
    quality backlinks.

Yes, I've experienced it before. This is what we call Google Dance. If you experience this, 100% possibility that Google will be updating its algorithm.
