    Scenario
The laptop is broken beyond repair. The hard drive appears to be intact.

Anyone know how to access the data on the laptop's HD?

well u need to take out the drives and attach it to another system.. i dnt really know if the power requirements would be different, but thats a standard, so shouldnt matter..

How do you do that then? Just cable it up to the motherboard? Or is there a usb cable thingy for it? Any idea?

Edit: nevermind, you gave me an idea so I rooted around for something and found an external usb-powered HDD Enclosure that looks like it can do the job. :)

first recover the hdd from the laptop.. see what kind of connectors it has for power and data.. if its new, should be S-ATA... u can connect it on the m/b to your desktop computer...

I'd rather use the external HDD enclosure and plug it into a usb port, tbh. Much less hassle than diving into my computer and hooking it onto the motherboard.

I didn't have it until you gave me the idea, which is when I ordered it, so I'll see how it goes when it arrives. :)

This worked perfectly. Two minutes to set up then plug n play. Also gives another external HDD. :)

You can connect hard disk in another laptop or other device and you can recover data using data recovery software

You don't need recovery software. Use the gizmo I've linked to above and all you need is a usb port. The drive then behaves exactly like an external HDD.

yes this can be the option but firstly create the image of the data that you want to recover it can save you from another data loss scenarios as well as provide you the option to schedule the recovery for latter time . while selecting a data recovery software only choose the software that shows you the preview of the data that will be recovered by the software or you spend a lot of money will no effect

Eh? What's the point when all you need to do is plug the HDD into the cheap device (linked to above) then use a usb cable to connect it to your computer? Job done. No need for recovery software, no need for creating an image, nothing. Plug and play, just like any other usb device.

If the laptop is broken and the HDD is still intact you can try connecting the laptop with some other device which can read the data from it. Like you can try replacing the HDD in some another laptop at some laptop repairing center and then access the data. Else you will have to go for data recovery at a data recovery service center like Stellar Data recovery
