I can share some on my little experience :)

We had a newsletter for 4 years and we were doing good with it, making 25% of our income from it. But we dropped it.
In the last 2 years it went from 25% income to less than 7% and spam report growing from 0 to 12 a week. All our members were double opt-in with unique 16digit ID but some just prefer to report spam than to click on unsubscribe. Our mail server IP was even banned from aol for 6 months!
Newletters less than 5,000 members is useless. Our last stats before we stopped were like:
    - members: over 12,000
    - open ratio: 30% or 4,000 which is very good
    - unsubscribe ratio: 5% of openned or 200
    - spam reported: 12 or 0.1%
    - bounced ratio: 10% of sent or 1200
    - renew needed: 1,406 new members per week to compensate unsubscribe, bounces and spam reports. (we never got that so the list was shrinking)
    - click through ratio: 12% of open or only 480 who folow links on newsletter...
    - estimated purchases: 5.25% of click through or 25 sales - 4 years ago this number was around 100 sales
    - time prepare the newsletter 24 hours - 4 years ago: 4 hours. Mainly because we had to be carefull to words used to avoid to be "junked" by ISP.

Bottom line: 12,000 newsletters sent and 25 sales or 0.21%.
Imagine if you send to 1,000 members... you may make 2 sales and get 1 spam report.
We hired a local newsletter consultant to analyse our results and to tell us what we were doing wrong. He came back telling that we were doing better than average for the industry (travel) so we stopped the newsletter.

We never touched bulk email as it sounds spamming and may give a bad reputation...

PPC is a good idea and works well for specific products or services. May be a waste of money on too broad keywords.

We never had any kind of success with Contextual Advertising or banner advertizing.

We have a business travel services department. We don't even have a website anymore for that and the best way to sell our services to companies is cold calling and relationship building.
