I just check the position of my site with any keywords on google, but i think it is not enough, you know yahoo also could take us traffic,so i use yahoo to check too,but i found that the same keyword in different search engine has difference position,so i want to know which factor of they calculated.
Each search engine has a different algorithm for ranking web pages. Google for example has over 200 facts they take into account. Yahoo may have up to that number too. The main think here is that Google may pay attention to one thing that yahoo thinks it is not so important. That is why rankings may vary from search engine to another. We don't know their crawling and ranking algorithm, so we cant tell with 100% confident why rankings are different.
Both the search engine have their own algorithm to index and position any website. If both will be identical then there will be no point running them. No one other than Google and Yahoo! knows how these algorithm works. You can get some idea about Google search engine from http://www.google.com/technology/pigeonrank.html and about Yahoo! from http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/search/basics/basics-17.html
They are very different in calculations. All I know that back links does affect search engine positioning.
jingwen, there's no way anyone can tell you how the SEs work because no one knows. sunil_gupta20801, I hope you are not serious about that pigeonrank link you provided. Or are you?
Ok.thanks all the same, and i think if i have lots good content and do basic seo on my site,i will have a good position on those search engine. I will do it.
