There's nothing wrong with buying links. That's like saying you can't pay to advertise your site anywhere. It's bullshit misinformation. What you don't want to do is buy and sell links through some of these known services like Text Link Ads.

i agree too. google frowns on you buying TLAs but it is ok for them if you buy adwords from them or get banner ad from the main portals like yahoo, netscape, propeller, etc. so to me, it is still money, goliath trying very hard to slay the davids of the internet.

Adwords and other types of ad services are, for the most part, not counted by search engines. Google also doesn't condemn links that use no-follow tags.

On another note, some ad services use their ads to gain Google Ranking for themselves. Have you ever noticed Bidvertiser's tag on any of their publishers' sites?

    It includes: <noscript><a href="http://www.bidvertiser.com">online advertising</a></noscript>

One of my competitor buy links , their site get punished.
After they remove the links, google treat their site as normal.

This is my personal experience. I used to sell links on site which was PR5 and then it went to PR4 and then next update it went to PR3 and then I thought I would stop all sold links and then six months now and couple of update and its back to 5. so I guess there might be some factoring but then we are talking about toolbar PR but my site ranking was never impacted.

Yeah, there does not seem to be a common agreement regarding google penalty. If anyone knows a page that google explains their policy I would sure love to read it.

Well I didnt build any other backlinks, or make any onpage changes in that time period. I created all the directory backlinks, then watched a massive fall in 10+ major keywords the site was ranking for. They all went back exactly 5 pages, it was definetely a manual penalty.
