Anybody still submit to search engines?

I saw an ad here in the forum where someone was advertising monthly submission to the top search engines. I recall sometime in the last Milleneum we used to do this. Now search engines spider your site, and find you through links from other sites.

Does anyone still submit to search engines?
    If so, why?

There is no reason to submit to search engines. If you get a link from page that gets spidered frequently, you will be indexed.

I was just trying to determine why someone would pay for this service, and if they did, I assume all the service provider needs to do is nothing. :)

There are a lot of sites claiming to register you to 100+ websites. My advies is don't use them! They collect your email for spam!

The only submit site I advise is MSN, once you submit, they crawl you within a week.

If your site is online, but you havent started link building, then you should submit.

I recently submited a friend's site. It isnt complete ...just a few pages..so its premature to build links...but as it was submitted, it is now indexed fully (Google).

if you emphasize on building links, exchanging links with other high page rank sites, then, there is no need to submit in search engines.

I actually did this as a test. I submitted one domain to the big three and with another domain, I pointed a link (that was regularly spidered) - just to see if one was faster, etc. The bottom line was that the linked one was definitely the quicker way to go, at least with my little experiment.

For as long as there are new webmasters coming online, companies like those will take advantage of and target their ignorance to make a little money off of them.

Site submision gets you at the bottom of a very long list. Getting a good BL will definately speed things up. And I've read speculation that states if you get crawled from a site submision and then the SE doesn't find any BLs within "X" period of time they drop you. I don't have any evidence, it's just rumor.

But I take exception to the post that claimed submitting too often will get you hurt. No way. Otherwise, we'd all be submitting the heck out of our competitors...

No, from my exprience its better to post in forums. Your site will get picked up quickly by Google.
