windows movie maker is good, but it can only convert to wmv format from avi. i had a sony handycam where i download avi from handycam, edit and will play in wmv format. i soon learnt that wmv is not good and you will need the videos to be in mpeg format to play in DVD players. i had a problem in finding mpeg converter from avi -> mpeg file.

since my notebook preloaded with winDVD, this software can easily convert to mpeg2 files on the fly. Thats my experience.

Ditch Movie Maker if you're trying to make a serious video. I've edited videos hardcore with Sony Vegas. It's an expensive program, but gets the job done well. If you want to go budget, try google for free video editing programs.

Pinnacle or Sony Vegas are the best for home users i guess.
But it depends on what are you trying to do with your video.
If you want to make a DVD, with high quality, a very good and string edition power, etc. I can think on Pinnacle.
Ig you want to add almost professional effects (but complicated to use), the go for Sony Vegas.
If you want just a simple edition, go for Honestech or even MS video editing tool.
