I was interested in phpmotion, until i realised you need a dedicated server for it.

In all cases - your server needs certain spec and not all hosts can handle what's needed.... good luck!

 

When it comes to dedicated hosting, do you have to install any extras that you need on the server yourself? or do you request the hosting company to do that?

 

Yes its best you speak with them and find out if their servers can handle it.. does need special scripts installed at their end. One place that does youtube script hosting is this place. OK good luck

do you really need a dedicated server for a small site ( let's say 1.000 uniques/day) ?

i really want to develop a small town video site with phpmotion but.... my host says can't handle the plugins etc... what should i do?

the host's phpmotion promote in their site, are they professional?
witch kind of service should i go to?

Because of the specific requirements to run the script im guessing theres no way to avoid dedicated, apart from using their host.

Yes when i was looking into it it has some specific requirements and on shared hosting you generally wont get them.

to run those type of sites you need ffmpeg which is not on any hosting accounts. thats why you need a dedicated server because that software would need to be installed. i have a server with it. i would share for a small fee per month. it would be cheaper than a dedicated server.
