    Adsense was launched in february 2003 ( I signed up for adsense in August 2003)

    and adwords i think was born before adsense, the publishers were paying to show their ads in google search results, that's true ?

    yes, i guess so , nice to see how things started so that you do not think anymore that google is a huge and scary and godlike company.
