Does anyone here program in JSP? I recently had a call with a prospective client who is insisting on having his social networking site developed in JSP w/ a SQL Server database, as opposed to using PHP or ASP. Mainly my reason is that I am not familiar with, and have never programmed anything in JSP. I told him that my recommendation would be with ASP if we're going with the SQL Server DB but he worried about portability (compatibility with mobile phones, even though each of these server-side languages would be compatible ) and stability of code. Can anyone here present a good case for using JSP over either ASP or PHP for this app? I can't see it. Thanks!
It is generally considered the "enterprise" strength serverside for non-Windows based servers. Our lead developer is able to do JSP but we rarely do any preferring to develop in .Net
Interesting. Yeah I don't really see many people using JSP, maybe because it is enterprise-grade stuff. I know it is supposed to be very secure, and the language of choice for online banking apps. Most often people I've come across like to work with either ASP.Net or PHP.
In the UK at least banks are starting to move from JSP to .Net too. The main thing is that most banks still run legacy mainframe systems and therefore have armies of developers that have strong java skills. Therefore in the late 90s when many companies suddenly realised that the web was here to stay and not just a fad for geeks it was a fairly obvious choice for them to their java programmers to create the functionality for their website. Banks being banks, if it aint broken dont fix it means that may financial services companies still have them
