Any way to rewrite URL and still retain SERP in Google?

If I have a current link on my site:

    /Test-Test2

which is already indexed in google and receiving results, would I be penalized and lose traffic if I did a mod rewrite redirect to something like

    /New-Test-Test2

Is the correct policy to use a 301 redirect?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

a 301 permanent redirect is the way you should redirect search engines from a removed, but indexed page.
