Hi, i am a Typo3 newby (heard about typo3 two months ago, installation ok, new extensions - ok, figured that one out as well). Yesterday i tried to upgrade typo3 3.6.2 to typo3 4.0. Using symlinks, i pointed to 4.0 source files. Went to install script, went through it (sort of). The install script doesn't update the database, it just shows the same page over and over again. So i did the other things as per update tutorial. Backend works - i mean it shows the new version in title bar. It doesn't show my page tree. Front end doesn't work - there is no pages in root. I do db check analysis, it sees all pages and records, db ok. Revert back to 3.6.2, everything is the wayit should be, and it all works. It has got me baffled. If anyone can help me, help would be most appreciated. Thanks. wmrdude.

I just wanted to add, in regards to my initial question. I have solved the issue. The mysql database username/password must have all the privileges (possibly even root) when you do upgrade. There will be no error shown if there is insufficient privileges. Wasted 4 days on this, and found it out by luck. The client never gave me full privileges.
