Hello there. I am planning to make a video clips website ...JUST video clips and nothing else. That means that i won't have any informational contents in the website. First, is adsense legall for that kind of website? it's like a blog, is'nt it? Second, is there any tip you can suggest to increase the CTR in website like this? because i'm little afraid that there be a lot of views as like i expect but very low CTR. Thank you
I am also interested in this topic. I try constantly to improve my websites for best results. As you can see from the sites in my signature I use only 1 ad in right, next to the video. When the user watch the video, he or she will see all the time and the ad. And one little ad in the video description. Why I choose these ad placements? Simply because many larger video sites use them. For example Youtube, Metacafe, snotr. I suppose that they know best how to optimise their CTR
The videos are embedded, so there is not a problem with the copyright. They are played with custom player, and this is allowed by YouTube. Also there is possibility uploading of original videos.
You are in the wrong thinking that you can display any video from youtube and be ok with copyright laws, it's foolish and ignorant.. but if you feel better lying to yourself, fine!
I will repeat - they are embedded. They are not copied and uploaded on my server. This is something that is allowed by YouTube and also they have watermark on every video, that goes to the YouTube page. Also YouTube allow using third party players and even show their own adverts in them (they are not related with me). Every description in the site is written by me or other users of the site and it's not copy-paste from YouTube. So, tell me, do you still think that this is foolish and ignorant?
James, sorry, just I become very curious and to find out the truth, because I don't like to be on the wrong side of the law The YouTube TOS states the following - You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under these Terms of Service. ~~ [youTube TOS part 6C] This clearly states that the owner of the video grants you a limited license to embed the video simply by leaving the embed option on (which is part of the functionality of the youTube Service).
You may be aware that people post videos on youtube which they don't have rights, yes? Youtube then remove them sooner or later.. But just because someone posts a video on youtube doesn't mean that now youtube has the right on those videos.. So that's a first point. Second point is that you seem to want to believe that because you don't host the videos yourself but simply display the youtube embed means you have nothing to do with the copyright infrigment.. Well that's false, as you're publishing a video on your site, how does your mind deal with believing that you're not publishing it, I don't understand. Take cracked software for instance, I assume you're believing that because the cracked software is not hosted on your site (could be on a file sharing service, could be anywhere) then you're not subjected to copyright infrigment laws? If you want you can read this page: http://www.blogherald.com/2007/07/09/the-copyright-risk-of-embedding-youtube-clips/ It talks about it.. To be honest I don't think one can run into any problem, until one does.. So the risks are little. In that sense yes you can do it safely. But in theory no. Me I'm not afraid so much of the laws than the practical consequences that can happen in: - my adsense account - my website adsense could disable ads on my site following a complain via their reporting form my web hosting company could disable my site following a dmca complain Those are real risks, that I do not wish to take. But those risks are low when you think about it, so if you feel the benefit outweight the risks of losing all, then ok do it, but don't say that you are protected in any way because it's youtube hosting the videos and not you. You are publishing them. If you do it for money, of course you'll have some automated way, you're not going to publish them by hand, so in fact you have little control, you can't monitor everything especially the copyright infrigments of people/companies with lot of money to actually do damage.. So in practise I'd say yes you can do it, but don't feel in any way protected, because it is the same, copyright infrigment or contributing to copyright infrigment, all can be a problem for you. Personally I don't want problems, and it's possible to make money while limiting the problem potential, that's why I never done a site to embed youtube and other videos, but yes I embed the odd video in some pages.. I know I'm not at ease with english and have a tendency to repeat things to make up for my lack of exact vocabulary, but you could read this page better written and more precise which says the same thing: http://shibashake.hubpages.com/hub/Embed-YouTube-Videos---Copyright-Infringement
Thank you for the detailed answer James! I read all these sites and now I feel how unstable is this niche. So I will try to push the uploading of videos by users (videos that they own), instead of embedding videos from YouTube.
You're welcome.. Personally I am totally against any form of copyright laws, but I did not invent them and have no will to waste any time fighting them.. What is most important for me is to follow the rules of adsense (which has copyright infrigment) and also those of my web hosting company since I don't wish to move my sites around and waste time like that.. You know, exactly the same as adsense team and google search team are totally separated, don't talk to each others, and can give contradictory advices because they have different goals, it's the same for youtube team, they will advice you to embed youtube videos on your site, but when you'll have a problem with adsense team, nobody will help you in youtube team, same with google search team.. That's why there are several good ideas that I have never done, because I prefer to stay simple, well within the boundaries of any potential problem sources.. For instance I have adsense revenue sharing sites and I have deleted users who posted things which are not clearly against adsense's tos, such as dating tips, but I delete them anyway because I'm not adsense and I prefer my members to talk about topics which are well within adsense's rules, and nothing which is near the borderline, I'm simply not interested in getting a little additional income if that means potential problems down the line and having to deal with those problems, I prefer to get less money and have my mind at ease even if I can never be totally at ease since I know income can stop from one day to the next and nobody has the obligation to give me ANY reason at all, I have no rights regarding this matter even if I respect all their rules all the time (which most probably I don't) It's just a risk limiting strategy I take, and I have no problem, no judgement of people who don't take the same approach as me, more power to you, it's just that I don't like to read that it is allowed, in theory it is not, but I'm not adsense police and will not report anyone for any violation, I just don't care, but I simply try to make my own adsense ban as far away as possible in time. I started in 2003 and so far it worked, but I have no idea if in 2013 I'll still be in their publishers or not, everyday it can stops with no reason given. It's ok because there are other ways of monetizing traffic, but still being lazy I want it to be far away so I can enjoy my long holidays some more months, please
James, I know your way of doing business very well. I am user of two of your sites, Shetoldme and Bestreviewer. I've send you one personal e-mail one year ago, asking you something about Drupal, because I had similar service based on Drupal (I Adore Drupal!) But maybe you receive a lot of mails so I supposed that you are busy person Have a nice day! It was pleasure to talk with you!
I have noticed something a few days ago, is that many legitimate emails from my sites are sent to the spam inbox of gmail, because I have in the past thought it would be a good idea to press the spam button for user registration emails which I received really too many.. And the only solution I've found in Drupal is to hack the core.. Haven't found a module to not be sent an email on new user registration (with admin approval) I thought it would put in spam only those emails, but by random I went into my spam box and have found many questions emails there, sent via the contact form.. So I may have missed yours and many others! Now, you know the best way to contact me if you wish is via the forum I've added to best reviewer, because there I answer everything and try to be the last poster in all threads, so that it's easy for me to see if there is anything new in the forum It works until now because activity is very low, but that's a good way to communicate, especially since those pages have my adsense, so everything I write in the forum could make some additional money for me, so it's an extra motivation for me to answer everything that is posted there
