Any success with automatic link exchange directories?

I keep on running into these websites that claim you can get thousands of backlinks simply by uploading a small file to your website and linking to it from the homepage. The file supposedly created a directory on your site with links to thousands of other website. The way that this is supposed to benefit you is that all the websites in your directory also have the same directory with your link. The concept sort of makes sense but will this hurt you more than helping you?

Anything automatic is bad and won't work in the long term. That said, my advice is to avoid it.

Have you actually tried them or are just going on what you heard?

I would never try something like that. Google will spot automate link building right away.
Add the complete lack of control over the links... and it can't get any worse than that.

Automatic linking software is something to avoid - big time...

Google don't like it at all (dont blame them)....

You may get a google penalty if your caught - and catching you is easy, coz you have to use the script in your code... This maybe flagged....

I have also recently noticed that in some search results , google has a warning that this web page may harm you - the common factor in most of these warnings is that the index page (usually)..contains an automated script...often a link building associated script...

This is a huge issue. You have no idea what other spammy sites and "bad neighborhoods" you site will link out to. It's almost impossible for someone to hurt your site linking in. It's really easy to hurt your site by linking out to the wrong places.

Can't Google tell that you've uploaded a file with coding that generates the link directory? If they can't then I might just give this a try. I actually found an automatic link exchange just for the niche I'm in.

It sounds like this app turns your website into a link farm. Google definitely doesn't like link farms.

And google can recognize the "footprint" of certain applications, and will penalize a site if it finds the footprint of an app it doesn't like.

If you do decide to proceed however, make sure you do a virus scan on this file before you upload it to your server.
