Any Penalty for Domain Name Forwarding?

We have some old domains we would like to redirect to a new domain via domain name forwarding.

Does anyone know any downsides to this or better ways to handle to not penalize the site(s)?

    Thanks!

Use 301 ( permanent ) redirects. These are definitely search-engine friendly.
