    One free and easy tool to use is google adwords keyword tool. Its free and very reliable.
    I would also recommend WordTracker which is extremely powerful considering that you also use it to generate Latent Semantically related keywords that you may never had considered before.

    Which Google API do you need specifically? I have tried this but was met with dozens of varieties of API's on Google's site.
