50,000 URLs are allowed in any one sitemap and it must be under 10MB when uncompressed. After that you need a central sitemap to link to your other files.

Change Frequency is how often you update a particular file... don't lie to Google!

Priority is how important one of your pages is compared to others. homepage is rather important. So is the homepage of a store, blog, or forum within your site. It's not a really high priority for Google to spider your contact page, or terms of service.

A related question to the original one about Google sitemaps: Is there a reasonable limit to the links on the actual sitemap page on our websites. For example, I currently have about 115 internal links and 10 outbound links on my website's sitemap page. Any trouble with that?

Some months ago I wrote about priority values in xml sitemaps and how to have them calculated automatically, e.g. if you do not have time to set them all manually. Whatever you do, do not just set the same value for all pages. If you intend to do that, you can just as well leave out priority values entirely :)

I think most tools will work using defaults... Just as long as you give them a website "root" path to scan.
