Hi everyone .. pretty new to keywords and stuff so was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on how to get a good ranking for my specific keywords.

I only know that getting inbound links with your keywords as the specific anchor text helps .. any other ways to help improve my keyword position?

    THanks!

    Hi,

    Keyword research is two fold.
    1 - find keywords
2 - research your list of keywords

keyword research is not just about brainstorming all your possible keywords (although brainstorming is the first step ;))

Your keywords should include what your site is about. Both generally and specifically.
    Also include what you sell/serve
what other terms your customers may be looking for

Once you have your list - expand it using tools like overture search suggestion and google adwords keyword suggestion

By now you'll have a list of up to 1000 key phrases (maybe more, maybe less) but it's good ground work.

    Then comes the research.
    You want to find out
*how much traffic each term gets
    *how competitive each term is

If you're new to the web then there's no easy way of doing it.
lowcompetitionkeywords.com is under development and should be soon offering these services.

Competitiveness can be determined in a number of ways
The easiest way is to just search the SEs for your keyword and see how many other pages are indexed for it.
next look at the pages in the top 10 and see just how much on page SEO they have implemented.
if you're really keen then look at the off site SEO of those pages (ie back links)

Hard work pays off in this case - if you have a niche site you are optimizing then you have a bit more of a chance of getting some excellent keywords that have relatively little competition. In my experience when searching for keywords for a client it is best to go for terms that have less than 3 million competition but that was just me. It can depend on what your site is about.

Try combining different terms together - particularly if the keywords you really want are incredibly popular. This might give you the edge you need to start ranking. Also locality can be useful, i.e. rather than "widgets uk" try "widgets bedfordshire" or "widgets lincoln" - perhaps other specifics could help?

It's hard work when you are starting off and could be a while before you see the kind of results you want, but perseverance and research are your best weapons at this point.

Use as many sub-keywords of your main keyword as you can. Get full list of sub-keywords of your main keyword using some good keyword research tool (leading ones are WordTracker (pay) and Overture Suggesion Tool (free). After digging into sub-keywords and maybe even sub-sub-keywords (depends on popularity and availibility of variants of a keyword) create a list of keywords that somehow correspond to contents of your site and finally start implementing thse keywords in your site's pages in all possible ways - use them in articles, tags, links, etc. However, you must always consider keyword density, prominence, frequency and proximity not to harm your site with overoptimization.

Build links with your anchor text. Don't use the same anchor everywhere. Write as much content as you can with your key words in it.... Repeat :)

In your keyword research, try to use expanded keywords and synonymns. For example, if you are selling air line tickets, you may use

    airline tickets
    air line tickets
    air tickets
    airlines ticket
    plane tickets
