Any insight on evaluating a misspelled domain for purchase?

    Say there is a misspell for sale on a popular word. Hard to tell if anyone would misspell it this exact way, but looks OK. The actual correct word domain is there also just catching type-in traffic itself. No traffic figures available for either.

    How would you guys appraise the name? Based on what parameter? Going price is just above the level at which you would purchase it anyway and then write the loss off if it did not work out.

    Thanks!

    D~

    In the absense of stats I would pay no more than the reg fee for one year and cut my losses at the end of the term.

    Unless it is a real popular typo you aren't going to make much parking it. Now if you develope it that might be a whole new ballgame.

    Well, I thought no one develops a misspelled domain ;) . At best it makes the owner look like an idiot. Or am I off in this assumption? Aren't they just for parking?

    It depends on the misspelling. If you develop it you want it to be as different from the real thing as possible so that it looks like you actually wanted the domain.

    I can't think of any good examples but lets say myspace versus myspice

    you'd want myspice to be about spices, but with a funky, youth focus.

    Parking or parody; thought I have seen one or two that I can't recall at the moment that were developed.

    I agree with ahkip. Typo's value is based on traffic. If it's got none, it's worth nothing.

    Value = traffic * conversion_rate * price_per_click_or_popunder.
    No traffic, no value.
