Hi I am running a free classifieds site and I've been trying different ways to promote it but I can't seem to find a very effective way to do so. Have any ideas? I'm not in it for the cash and I don't really use ads so I can't really spend big bucks. It's craigslist but better looking and with the organization of eBay. Have you tried contacting charity organisations and asking them to give you a mention on their site. Try posting to forums where charity is a big thing e.g. baesystemscharitychallenge.com and some religious forums. Good luck for a good cause. regards Larry
I think you may be facing the challenge that's brought down everyone that's ever tried to compete with ebay and craigslist (read: yahoo, google, etc). Sites like this require some niche placement to get any traction. Trying to be everything to everyone by yourself means that you'll never be able to position yourself as a realistic alternative. Good luck, nonetheless.
Classifieds need traffic and users to be useful and worth listing on. Have a massive giveaway or event that offers people some real value, and encourages them to get their friends involved. The social networking sites do this by allowing you to enter your Hotmail, Yahoo and other instant messenger IDs and they'll invite your entire addressbook automatically. If you can do something like this and offer them a bonus for signing up, you'll soon have plenty of users.
On the back of the previous comment, I would say that think of a giveaway, and put it in the press release, while making that about charity and what your site has to offer. This way you are covering two grounds.
