Any good tips for campaigns on display network?

Generally there are always some of the sites that everyone of the same field would bid for, as managed placement I mean. Any tips or tools to find most suitable but not so hot placements? Coz the google placement tool doesn't always work well.

And, I made a test last month, just added two text ads into a campaign where there were only image ads before. The result was that the conversions increased a lot. However, since this month, the good flow all gone, and CPA higher and higher.
So do you think it is better to have image ads only in campaigns for display network, or text ads and image ads together?

Appreciate all attention and replies. Thanks!

Google Placements are generally quite bad for targeting specific sites, Google make it kind of hard to extract the best in order to take a bigger sum of ad dollars (they are now positioning it as a branding product as opposed to direct response).

I like to split text ads and image ads into separate ad groups - this means I can bid more for image ads to show so I can get more impressions (assuming the brand message in an impression carries value). I would definitely always do both ad types because that way you can get more impressions.

Another tip is to target subdirectories on websites - i.e. youtube.com/Business which might be more relevant to your ad than other parts of YouTube.

MrChuckTaylor, Thanks for your reply. Totally agree that google always has a way to extract the best, it means your campaign cannot perform always as good as the beginning; even the campaigns in the same account influence each other, including but not limited to conversions and impressions.

I also like the subdirectories. Once tried add "www.example.com" to managed placement, when "example.com" reaches too high CPA, sometimes works...

I think the best that works in display is the image ad with blue text (which feels as if its text ad).... I am sure you must have seen it.

If you want more exposure contextual image is still the way to go plus you don't have to pay extra for every impression. Just make sure that when you do this, you have prepared various size of your banners and make sure it's an eye candy and a very good call to action. Display in other network is good for me, personally speaking it indeed attract more traffic to my other site. You just have to do your research, Google has that as well.
