    First thing to learn:
Java is a strongly-typed, compiled, C-like server-side programming language. Long ago, someone tried to use them in web browsers (Java applets) and they sucked and failed.

Javascript is a loosely-typed, interpreted Scheme-like client-side (usually) programming language mostly used in browsers.

About as different as rhinos and elephants.

He's not talking about himself, but the author of topic and many other people.

And I sincerely hope varghesenair is not thinking about creating Java Applets...

well, the name 'javascript' was a marketing ploy by netscape to make what was previously known as 'live script' / 'mocha' (a derogatory branch of ECMA script) a buzz-word spin off through the _then_ talked about/hyped java, an attempt to establish some undue credibility.

ECMA script still exists and is the basis / foundation for both javascript and actionscript - but the name of js remains erroneous and misleading. i think it's fair to say js is now the more popular of the two--it's actually the one language with the largest possible platform base that can support and run it, making it the most popular in the world by association...

Imagine if Java hadn't changed its name... we'd be writing "oakscript" lawlz.

It would be nice if Actionscript were more based on ecmascript but as I understand it, Adobe jumped the gun and implemented actionscript before things were set with ecmascript... hence the differences.
