I am interested in getting a job in a SEO firm and i have a few question. Hope you can help me out with this. (assume i am a trainee or entry level)

    1) Beside SEO, what kind of skill is required?
    2) What factor will you consider beside skill (ie team work, creativity)
    3) What would you like to see from my portfolio
    4) What is the daily routine of my job?

I would like to get answer for these question so i can prepare myself better before my job hunt. Any help will be appreciated.

I've done SEO in-house for several businesses. Never worked for an actual SEO firm, but its pretty close.

Mostly, like anyone, they want to see rankings. That you know your shit. That you know blackhat and whitehat. Taking a site from site conception to top 10 rankings.

As for a daily routine, that really depends on the position. I've been a Link Manager as well as a Lead SEO, right below the Director, so your routine really depends on what they hire you for. Mostly though, I structured flow charts for new sites, where to get content (outsource or in-house), Link building strategy and Monetization of site (satellite site - links or lead generation).

Sometimes I'd spend a couple weeks designing new tools that aren't on the market to buy or free to use on the web. I'd work with the programmers to come up with scripts to test new ideas, as well as track all efforts.

I am an SEO and i was in the same position as you once.

Some of the things that helped me alot was the following..

    1. Writing experience. I focused on the fact i had prior writing experience and that i was capable to do some of the text for websites. It is nice to be able to suggest someone change the text for SEO reasons on a site but it is another thing altogether to be able to suggest the right text right off.

    2. Ability and experience working alone and prioritizng. SEO is not something they understand and so you will find proving your own reliance and ability to not need a boss to be a great stength

    3. I also found that opening admitting that you want to continue to learn more and want to stay cutting edge and with the times helps alot too.

These are points that helped me...

Each person is differant and you just need to remember that corporations want to feel comfortable so you have to go beyond saying you can do the work they dont understand already.

Off to Vegas.. on the companies dime.. Sell that you need to stay cutting edge.. it pays off.

    Cya

Edit: THe routine is driven by the customer.. You have about a 40% chance of having a normal week routine and the customers complaints and concerns will always throw that to shit.

I am in this position rightnow where i'm acting like a little bit "bossy" of course because you need to tell the programmers to do this and that, it shouldn't be like this and that, and so on. And i think i'm not getting a good impression because of this since i'm only new to the company.

i had joinded SEO firm just before 3 months, at that time i was new to this field,so i will tell u my experience.
there are some steps which u have to follow to optimize any site, this are.

1.study the domain name which is given to you.
2.check the keyword popularity which u have to target.
3.than enlists the main keywords on which you have to concentrate.
4.create SEO pages for that keyword.and optimize that pages.if images are there than put alt tag and you have to take care of meta tags.descreption and meta keywords.internal linking is also required.
5.first complete this basic offline SEO and upload your pages and than go for link exchange, directory sub,and artical submission.

there are so many factor which i could not include here.the best way to learn SEO is to read forum regularly and study your competetor's sites.u have to read lots of things online which published everyday.just try to learn from your seniors.

    all the best.
