Any Disadvantage Too MANY Proxy Topsites?

    Hi guys

I was wondering if there is any disadvantage to submitting your proxy to as many topsites as you possibly can?

I know you have to put a small button on your site homepage but this isn't really a factor because you can just put it in a scrollable box or a marquee!

If I am not mistaken you gain ranks in topsites by hits on your site not clicks on the button right? So haveing the topsite button virtually invisible in a small scrolllbox should not be much of a factor?

I plan on using this http://freeproxysubmit.com/submit/ (great tool BTW) as well as manually submitting to some topsite I have found to be useful. Anybody have any reccomendations of topsites not included in that auto submitter that they receive alot of traffic from (please don't spam with your own sites)?

Rep will be added for good responses and answers!

    Thank you

Slows down the landing of your homepage dramatically for dialup users (not the case for many schools anyway). Topsites usually also give you low quality traffic. However by joining topsites, they also give you more backlinks and such (helps your SERP's)

In my opinoin, it's better just to sign up to a few topsites at the start, this way, your proxy users wouldn't be hindered by the load time, and your proxy website will still get traffic.

Sign up for those topsites, but don't leave a recipricol or the little image they have you insert on your page. Just do it for the link.

    @ sanlands

My understanding is that most topsites will only list you if you provide them with a backlink on your site (most commonly a little button banner)

Will the sites still list you even if you don't put the button on your page?

If I remember, they'll let you list. But if you remove the link the votes or hits will just stop counting.

I really dislike topsites as all the little buttons you have to add gets really ugly. People will pick the proxy to use that's are fast and least cluttered.

I find it annoying having to add all the banners as well.. There must be an easy quick way to just make them all text links.. or something like that..

I have perfectly fine load times as the buttons load after the page does so they can surf anyways.

You could put the topsite buttons in an iframe so they don't affect the page loading time.

I know many people use this method with ads.

If you remove the link they will automatically not list you any more. So you will lose the backlink.

Oh well I guess it sorta depends on the topsite or script. Since I've got a few that still have my links.

Either way I'll have to say avoid topsites altogether. You won't get much traffic, or very poor traffic and it just slows down the page and clutters the page.
A proxy without any buttons or banners looks classy. :p

It will still affect the page loading time. It will just load up in a little iFrame box, how does that supposed to slow down your loading time? The banners still need to be loaded...

It has to do with how the browser "paints" the page.... If there is an IFRAME the page within the IFRAME is separate so loads separately so to speak. The browser will paint the paint the page with the IFRAME then display the contents of the IFRAME as it loads.

It does work thats why people do it.

I would definitely say add to topsites. I used to run a few proxies, and quite a bit of the traffic came from some topsites.
