any chance "trusted users" could be allowed to edit their posts longer?

longer than the current limit, that is. when I looked at some of my old posts there are definitely some things I'd rather not like listed, but obviously I can no longer edit them and I really don't want to bother the mods by asking them to remove all the specifics as there are quite a few.

I can understand there's some need for the editing restriction, but if you had people that've been here for a certain amount of time, have a certain number of posts, and have a certain level of rep, maybe a "trusted" usergroup would be created that'd be allowed to edit their posts past the normal limit?

uh. how would it eat any remotely significant amount of bandwidth?

Probably best to just ask if something really needs to be changed rather than try to define specific users that have access to edit indefinitely...

I'd just imagine it'd be a ton of hassle for the mods if a lot of people were doing that. personally I wouldn't even want to bother them with it; it's probably 25 posts I'd want to remove minor snippets of info from.

is there some specific danger you're worried about with editing privs lasting that long?

I was thinking automatic usergroup promotion, not individual accounts being added-- that'd be a huge pain :)

I understand it wouldn't be a big deal if I was the only one that thought this but I've seen other people mention it. in the buy/sell/trade forums for example, a lot of people have commented about wanting to be able to edit the urls out after purchases.

The biggest worry is if a member gets irritated at another member for whatever reason, and in the heat of whatever decides they want to delete every post they ever made (trust me, that request happens a LOT... from established members), then the next day they are thankful we didn't do it for them. Not you specifically, but if you start granting stuff like that to "trusted" members, we are probably talking 2,000+ members... it's bound to cause some problems... also could be problems were someone leaves their forum account logged in on a computer and someone can come in and wipe out everything they ever did on the forum if they wanted (also happens sometimes, but the current setup prevents them from going back more than 8 hours).

yeah, on forums I run I get "delete my account" requests from time to time as well; we just say we have a policy of not doing that. I couldn't see it happening often (maybe if ever?) that someone's going to go back and delete 1,000 posts they have one by one. I've never had it happen once, though obviously I know DP's a huge forum and that'd increase the chance a bit.

i guess its all fine, 8 hrs is enough time to edit posts,
initially i dint like it myself kinda unable to edit posts , but now just used to it ,
in worst case mods are there to help always.
