I like the idea of a 'collaborative book', but... ...Drupal seems to have a pretty big learning curve & I've heard the server load can be a big problem. Any thoughts about Drupal, or 'fans'?
Drupal is the best cms software i've ever seen (and i have tested tens...). Its learning curve depends on what you are triing to do with it; you can have a running base installation (books, blogs, articles) in minutes, but when you begin to understand how it works, test modules, ... you can use it in hundreds of differents projects, its flexibility accounts for the learning curve; Server load depends on the modules you are using, database, etc...; with few modules, a request can be served with 10-15 sql queries, but some modules need more selects, updates, etc.. with results in server load. In order to avoid this there is a good cache module, a module that can be used to deactivate some functionaliy in cases of heavy server load, a development module that helps on fine tune performance, and avoid excesive server load, etc....
You do mean 600 at a time? (or 600 per day ) I keep getting drawn back to look at it Drupal isn't quite as 'intuative' as soom other programs Like you said: It depends on the usage, and It's very powerful, with extra modules added. 'Server load depends on the modules you are using, database, etc' Also, Some people can claim to be experts at 'fine tuning servers' to work better. The really good ones probably charge high prices for their service. Some hosts 'specialize' in certain software, but that can also just be a gimmick to charge more money. Good luck.
At the beginning I hated drupal cause I had no idea what was going on but after a couple of days messing with it... (also note its good to actually read the tutorials haha) I realized how powerful drupal is. I personally use it on almost all my sites lol I love it now.. I tried joomla but I didnt like the back end system.. Anyhow you should try it out if you are in interested "Just Do It" lol dont give up cause it will be worth it in the end =)
i use drupal on my site and so far no problems here it has worked really well, just using it for forum, blog, community right now, i plan on implementing video i hope that i can do this easily with it, we'll see!! good luck!
Good advise, Drupal is great other then a resource hog. Just try to keep things running smooth on shared hosting.
I use Drupal for my combo site/forum/community and (usually) love it.. It has handled surges in traffic with ease: Front page of Digg (while still on a shared host!): no problems Mentioned on nationally syndicated radio-show: no problems Google Adsense "Success Story": no problems corrupted database once: BIG PROBLEMS Overall it has been able to do everything i've needed.. There was a learning curve, but it wasn't very steep. And yes, it's a bit of a resource hog if not configured properly.
I'm giving it a chance (putting in some effort) & really starting to like Drupal ~~~~~ (Only one example) Getting the 'friendly URL's' to work certainly could not be any easier
Thats odd I never had a problem with the friendly urls I thought it was pretty easy you just turn it on... lol
