Any benefit from accepting credit cards

Do you see any benefit for directories to accept credit cards directly not through paypal or other payment processors?
1 benefit is lower processing fees (~2% compared to ~5%).

For that you need a merchant account or something though dont you? will the charge for that mean no saving on processing fees?

I think most submitters still plump for paypal.

I have 5 payment options including 2CO on one dir but paypal is always the choice.

Then you will need to buy a SSL certificate too i guess?

even those who don't have paypal account can use their cards through paypal, right? I guess most of them will choose this instead of giving out their card info to the merchant.
the merchant account/gateway fees are around $30 a month. but if you already have them then you won't pay other fees for another website using the same payment page (in the same secured area).

    I think so.

Seems costly if it doesn't get covered by profit or used often enough.

Paypal is not supported in all countries and some people can pay directly by credit cards only.

Not really. 2checkout is $50 one time fee to set up and you can accept credit cards and paypal trough it.

    Hope this helps.

I use 2checkout for 1 site, I hate their sales/vendors reports. I find it very hard to check sales and payments especially for recurrent payments. plus the time they take to verify a sale. For that one I will sure switch to the merchant account. I am sure 2co can useful in other circumstances.

I do agree with Pipes. You will need to pay a monthly amount on processing the fees plus an instalation fee and a percentage from every transaction, I think.

I very much doubt people will give their card details to many web directories on the net. Paypal is known worldwide, trusted, and even if the submiter doesn't have a paypal account they still can pay.

I'd guess the difference between the processing fees and paypal fees is not that big, is it?

Yes I guess that's the biggest concern for small web directories.
2co or paypal may depend on the nature of the site and the customers, pipes reported that pp is the first choice and Rod said most opt for 2co.

I avoid PayPal since they will not intervene upon my behalf. They have set up their terms to really limit the rights of the credit card holder. I want to deal exclusively with my credit card company. I have pretty much stopped using PayPal, and avoid situations where I am forced to do so.
