    Can make you look more professional and memorable.
    Also, good for bookmarks and RSS.

    I think it's pretty necessary and worth the 5 minutes to make.

    I completly agree! It's a small thing but it's one more thing to seperate your site from others.

    Its just an small icon for making your website more beautiful. Its not needed at all. Usually famous websites are known by their Favicon. For example Google known by "G" for all people , but most websites cant get an special Favicon for themselves that every one knows their website by it.

    Your favicon is like a trademark. People associate it with your "brand". If you're working to build brandname recognition, it is a must.

    A Favicon is basically a logo for your site which you can use to brand your site from others.
    With this, people could recognize your website from their long time visit just with the favicon or with that logo.

    I think it adds more user friendly feature on your site. Coz I always find it useful, if I open lots of tabs on single browser it helps me locate one site very quickly.

    And if your site is bookmarked on any web browser it really looks nicer if you have a unique icon :D

    I've been led to believe that it helps make your site stand out when listed in your bookmarks.

    Brands your site, sticks out in bookmark list, takes about 5 minutes to make with an online tool, another 5 minutes to upload and add the html to your pages. It's one of the small things you can do that makes a difference.

    I add a favicon to nearly every site I build. It's all part of branding your site, and in my opinion, it's important.

    Ditto to what everyone has said. If from what you've read it makes sense to you then go for it.
    However bear in mind that if you decide to change your favicon in the future, you need to delete your cookies in order to see the new one.

    You can actually increase your site performance (i.e load time) by having a favicon... if you dont, you will be generating a 404 for each request, which will happen even if you dont have one. See the favicon tips here;

    http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html
    http://www.thesitewizard.com/archive/favicon.shtml

    If you need to create one, you can do so here;

    It really makes your site look professional. Your favicon is like your online trademark which helps users to easily distinguish your site when it's opened on their browser.

    It makes your site look more professional and brands your site so people can associate the image with your site.
