Are there any advantages of using Google's url shortner, goo.gl ? I mean, since the service is from Google itself, is there or will there be any SEO - SERP advantage ? Or any other benefit which other services dont provide ? Seo experts, your help is required.
I think it is just like any other url shortening services available. As per SEO I dont think there is any benefit. One of the main idea of using url shortening is not to pass credit to destination website.
SEO is becoming more social these days, and any online campaign must consider things like blogs, Twitter activity and other social media. With this said, and if we focus on Twitter for a moment, there are some 'SEO' benefits (although I suppose it's more 'Social Optimisation' benefits as opposed to SEO) to using Google's URL shortener. If a service such as tinyURL or Bit.ly fails or is taken offline, each and every link posted on Twitter using these services, would become deadlinks - an issue which would create havoc in the social world. Of course, the same would happen if this was to happen with Google...although as the biggest and most reliable service online, it is highly unlikely. It may therefore serve you well to choose to use goo.gl rather than the likes of tinyURL and/or bit.ly...I hope this is clear!
Can you explain 'not pass credit to destination website' ? So, in short it just provides reliability. Right ? Nothing in terms of 'direct' benefit to the site using it. Right ?
Well I would think OBVIOUSLY, Google is watching. Basically, they now get another insight to what is being passed around online, and I'm sure that it will sooner or later effect their algo some how. It will probably work in nicely with their new live search results feature. Could be great for us if we have a website link that likes to get emailed, or tweeted.
Totally agree with you. This will also kill the other url shortening services viz. bit.ly etc. Scrapped ? What do you mean by that ? And why would they wanna scrap their own service ?
Right now it's benefit is just an alternative site for url shortener. But probably with "google's magic" they have a good plan for this in the future.
The issue here is trust. Google trusts more on its own services. If goo.gl has no value, then why would google create it in the first place?
never heard of this before... but it only works for google services? i've never seen the option in gmail, or docs etc.
No, there will be no advantage of using googles. The reason being that all these URL shortener offer is a 301 redirect service, and the importance of the url shorting service itself will there not be a factor. Regards,
I agree, Google's URL shortening service will have those benefits, but they are the only benefits I can see. The popular shortening sites like bit.ly etc, use 301 to do the redirect, so will pass juice (so long as the site the link is on passes juice) I don't really like any of them, and if micro blogging sites like twitter didn't count the URL as part of the 140 character limit, then I would never use one. I don't know why Google would provide one for blogger when there are no character restrictions. It just makes it easier for spammers to disguise their spam links using Goo.gls name. Cheers James
