There is a question regarding link exchanges that has me puzzled. I would like to hear opinions on whether or not Site A in the following scenario would benefit from a link exchange with Site B. Site A PR4 turned on the computer one day only to find that Google had performed an update. How upsetting it was to see that the site's hard earned backlinks had taken a direct hit and some of them had been obliterated. The site's webmaster felt the need to go to work building new links. Right away Site A PR4 found another site who we will now call Site B PR4 in its niche that seemed open to link exchanges. Upon looking it was noted that Site B PR4's resource page had only a PR1 whatsover while Site A's PR4 link pages all had a PR3. Will this type of link exchange be beneficial to Site A or detrimental? Why?
No link are detrimental. They just dont have any weigth. A link as always some type of value, if it is not search engine credibility, it will be traffic.
I see what you are saying but wouldn't a link exchange with these circumstances drain some of the "juice" from site A's PR3 resource page? Or is a vote simply a vote and the PR of the pages involved means nothing?
Pr does matter in links. The main thing is just keep link building. Everyday, every free moment, for years and year and years. When you have thousands of incoming links, the small little things you are worried about will not matter as much. You don't want to also have thousands of outgoing links, but a few hundred per every few thousand incoming is not going to hurt much in my opinion. Ideally we would exchange a pr1 link for a pr4 link. Sometimes we are on the good side of this equation, sometimes we are not. Either way, just keep link building.
But what if SITE A with a PR3 resource page can find virtually NO link partners with more than a PR1 resource page? Would 100s and 1000s of those off balance links eventually drain SITE A completely?
