I have been burnt by Paypal a few times. They maintain that they are simply a middleman that that since the goods never come through their doors, they can't be charged back when a transaction goes bad.

You can contact your bank and file a fraud report and you might get your money back. Don't tell them about PayPal finding in your favor, or the bank will want to wait and see what PayPal does.

Also, it is important to note that if you do get your money back, PayPal may close your account unless you fund it again with the $1000.

Correct. He got scammed by the scammer, not PayPal. What do you expect them to do? It says in their reply they tried to recover the funds, but couldn't. After that there is nothing that could be done.

Yup, that's happened to me about 15 times.
PayPal's very bad with disputes: they give time to the scammer to pick up their funds and leave their service basically.

I'd suggest using another payment processor for such large funding if I were you. PayPal is good for small payments, but use an escrow service or something safe when dealing with large amounts.

sucks that you got scammed, PayPal is unreliable when it comes to things like this, but heck, it's not entirely their fault ;)
