And Here I Lie: An Ode to Nicole Brown-Simpson

A buddy of mine writes spoken word poetry. I wanted to share one of his poems with my LSMSA family.





They have demonized my existence and at the same time immortalized me as being all that is wrong with our system,

all the evils of celebrity justice in America, all that is wrong when a black man loves a white woman in a wolrd ruined by our inadequacies magnified under the lights of racist America

They have exploited who I wa; they have marginalized who I am as they proel the twin dynastic values of true sorrow and exploitation

They on one hand have said our marriage which went awry was what's wrong with race mixing in theis world that a black man and a white woman can never be civil when their civil contract is breached and broken

That my death is what happens when one of those darkies gets out of control

Forgetting I was a victim, forgetting I was once the love of this man's life, forgetting I was the Mother of this man's children

Forgetting that I am more than a jury award, that I am more than a cause, that I gave birth to his and mine legacy,

That I am not just a face in a magazine, that I am not just a convenient victim, that I am not just a reason to seek vengeance, that I am dead at the hands of......someone

Whether it be him or someone else, I am more than a monetary value; I am more than a mere foot note on race relations in America

I am more than justice delivered or justice denied, I am more than the revelatory aspects of bad police work, of exceptional lawyerly skills, I am not just a verdict, I am not just a cause, I am not just a battered wife, I am not just a settlement to be satisfied,

I am not just another statistic to be pondered on late night TV; I am more than sound bites, I am the representative of this, who had life snuffed out,

I ..........am dead

And here I lie eternally pondering when that will be noticed

 

Poor baby, sounds so victimized.
