You don't have to make things from scratch to be considered self made. According to your definition Sam Walton is a moron because he didn't make bunny slippers or any of his other products.

He developed a business model that was revolutionary at the time.

Google changed the way search was done...and for that they aren't morons.

You should read Sam Walton's autobiography. Love or hate Walmart at this stage, its a damn good read and full of really good and sound business advice and ideas.
