Another interesting comparison is that at the time of Rome's fall, their forces were stretched very thin across many countries. They had to rely less on Roman citizens, but people from the respective countries, to act as military and 'police' force.

Funny how we often talk about being stretched thin across 2+ fronts and are relying heavily on paramilitary "contractors" to do a lot of the work.

    Hmmm

*The next big super power? China.

The Roman Republic was on a downward tend since the Punic Wars. The yeoman land holder was the back bone of the Republic and many were killed by Hannibal. They was also further decline due to the manpower requirements of the Spanish Wars. Romans were required to serve 20 and slowly the small holdings of the Roman citizen soiulders were abandoned and consolidated into large estates of the weathly.

The Social Wars of 91–88bc finally were the breaking point of the Republic and brought into Rome the age of the "General on Horseback"

Sulla marched into Rome in 88bc and Rome saw the first glimpse of the future dictatorship of Sulla.
