I know the rule of thumb is use Ancor Text that is your keyword. But what if it is a link without a keyworded anchor text, or an anchor text that is only a partial match? Does that help in any way.
it will help if you have your keywords in your domain name... like fireextinguisher.com and so on. I'm not sure if it will help to have keywords built into a subdirectory like fireextinguisher.com/CO2 for example. Does anyone know the answer to that?
Any links will help, but w/o the anchor text, you won't get as much help from when someone queries it.
What you really want is a lot a variations of anchor text that contain your keyword in the links coming back to your site. The variation helps the search engines determine what your site is about.
Not just anchor text but surrounding text also matters. Also you need many different variants of the anchor text for it to look natural.
Google wants our links to be natural (organic), a result of people linking to us on their own initiative because they really like our site. The problem is, however, that most high PR sites don't want to just give links away... unless you're site is the most amazing and incredible they've ever seen. My problem is that when I finally do get people to give me these "natural links", they end up using my name (ustillup) in the the anchor text. I feel like emailing them and saying "Thank you so much, but can you please change the anchor text to include my keywords." I guess urls that contain keywords have an advantage, though their names often end up sounding goofey and full of hyphens (like: free-chat-link-directory.net). What if Facebook had called itself "free-socialnetworking-and-chat-with-friends-and family.com".
hahaha. Your response really got me smiling. I have another site with good PR and I do get mails from people requesting for links to change the anchor text. As long as they ask nicely, I have no problems about making the change for them
To solve all problems, when deciding what your url should be, make sure it has keywords in it so you won't need to e-mail so many people asking them for proper anchor text. Some people might link to you with "click here" which I hate the most.
