Anchor text / page ranking question

Ok, say you have a page: PAGE A

It's ranking well for keyword "widget" but you already have a ton of links pointing to it with the anchor text "widget" so you don't want to overdo it (but you want it higher)

If you use the anchor text "widget" pointing PAGE B will it boost PAGE A results, or will PAGE A stay the same and PAGE B will climb up the ranks?

    Thanks in advance. :)

Final question: do you even need to worry about pointing too many of the same anchor texts to the same page or is that being paranoid because then the competition could do that to you and knock you out.

Focus one/two keywords per page. Having said that, if you want to move up higher for "widget" and you already have a ton of links with "widget" as the anchor text, then yes, you need to change it up a little bit. When getting links, try using "new widgets" or "Red Widget" or "Buy Green Widgets". Also keep your main keyword within the anchor text, but add in second and third tier keywords. By doing so, you'll reinforce the rankings for "widget", but you'll also start seeing improvements in your long-tail tactics too.

    Hello,

As I understand, you have two main "worries" here:
    1. too many anchors
    2. linking to other pages

About the first one, it is always recommendable not to over do it! You will have to find a balance between SEO and spam. Maybe you can have this at the begging, but after some time and getting higher ranking, try to lesser the anchors and make balance.

Concerning the second one: if you link from page A to page B you transfer points from you PR to page B. The best thing to do is to link back from page B to page A. Like this you interchange PR points for better ranking of both pages.

I hope you got your answers.

    Regards

I was switching it up, but i found that it's not as effective. If you're looking for "widget" then the anchor widget" has more power than "blue and red widget" I guess that is the answer though.

And it's got to point to that specific page right? Google's not going to rank that page better if there are "widget" links pointing to other pages on the site (it's not looking domain-wide and ranking that one page based on all of the links pointing to that site right?) Its a difficult question to convey. Thanks!

The anchor widget has higher weight, but look at this, it is important!

By using 'blue and red widget' you still tackle the main keyword - widget, but you do not appear as spam to the Search engine.
