When I built backlinks a month ago, Anchor text I used is a 3 words long keyword---(word1 word2 word3). Right now I want to rank well for 2 words keyword---(word1 word2). Those 2 words are already contained in previous long keyword. I am wondering if it will help to use anchor text as (word1 word2) instead of longer one. Does it make any different?

In the beginning, I try to aim at 3 keywords--(word1 word2 word3),(word1 word2), (word2 word3), that is why I come up with anchor text (word1 word2 word3) which actually includes 3 keywords. Right Now the longer one(not competitive) already in first page, but the shorter one(medium competitive) is still in page 12.

Excellent strategy to follow. I think you are asking if a link with the exact match anchor text is better than one with additional words in it.

From my own testing I have NOT seen any evidence that anchor text of [word1 word2] is any better than [word1 word2 word3].

all the keywords that you mention are different keywords.

if you want to rank w1 w2, you must change all of the anchor txt with w1 w2.

having backlinks with w1 w2 w3 will not help you to rank for w1 w2

What? Where did you get that idea? Of course it will, in fact it's necessary. You don't want 100 links, all with w1 w2 as anchor. You must mix it up: w1 w2, w1 w2 w3, w1 w2 w4, w3 w1 w2, etc.

If you want SERPS that will last well into the future you need to get smarter about your anchor text. Picking just a few KW's is lame... search engines are smarter than that. I would use *as many* anchor's as you can... and the key is to make it look natural.

    i.e.

    Blue Widgets
    Great Blue Widgets
    top blue widgets
    cheap blue widgets
http://www.bluewidgets.com (what's more natural than just the URL)
    more info

    Carlito's blue widget website

I could go on but you see the point... you need to really mix up the anchor text. Once you have mixed up the anchor text enough... then focus on the two word phrase you want to rank for.

I've had good luck with a slightly higher concentration of particular keyword combos, and then lesser concentrations of miscellaneous keyword combos. It follows the 'look natural' principle, and has worked well.
