I posted this question in another forum also but I am wondering what your thoughts are on Anchor Links and their effect on rankings? Do you think they can help improve rankings?

Anchor links, they are links on a page that link to a sub-section of the same page.

Yes, they can help. Just like external ones. Internal linking is as, if not more, important.

EDIT - misread that. No, if you are linking to the same page; like <a name> or something. Then it doesn't really do anything, unfortunately. I do this on lots of my pages for people to skip down, but I have not seen the ranking improve for any of the words I use as the anchor.

So maybe it can just increase keyword density.

Is KWD a factor, though? I don't think it really is anymore.

I think KWD is only a factor if it is too high and triggers a KW stuffing penalty. So I guess it is safe to say Anchor Links don't help with rankings.

What do you call those links that link to sub-sections of the same page? I call them Anchor Links because they link to Anchors in sections of the same page.

I belive they will only help if you are linking to other pages in the site, and I agree that it is good for kwd but I would keep it small, I think your keywords should not show up more than 4 or 5 times on a page but that will also depend on the amount of content that you have on the page.
