    What are the steps one should do when analyzing your competitor who is dominating you in Google?

    Copying content is not only down your SERP, but, you'll also loose PR.

    You can use some softwares to see where they are getting backlinks from, and you can work to get links from there as well.
    On-page SEO would also play big role.

    digitech, he meant copying their SEO effords, not content.
    And of course, you need to monitor your competitors and copy their seo, and on top apply your own.

    SEO Plugin for Firefox from SEObook.com is a great plugin to have. Also, SEQuake does similar things, it lets you sort SERPs by Pagerank or any other metric

    linkdomain:competitorsurl.com -competitorsurl.com

    do that with seo quake and then sort by PR to see where they are getting the juicy links from :)

    Obviously it's not a good way. It's possible when the competitor gets a link from blogs comments, forums and directories - but these links often are very weak.
