Analysing why a competitor got SERPS #1

I would like to create a step-by-step strategy to analyse why a site gets to position #1 in the SERPS. To me, this would suggest analysing the backlinks, the anchor text and who the authorities and hubs are and if they have links from them.

    So,

    1. Run some sort of tool to get info on all backlinks and anchor text

    2. Analyse the anchor text for the keyword that has the #1 ranking.

Is that the way to do it? Will that tell me why a site ranks #1?

Also, what tools are there to check the backlinks with anchor text? Are there any free tools that do this or are they only paid for version?

    Thanks,

    Jon

There is more to why a site is #1 in the SERPS than just back links. You need to look at how many pages are in the site, how much unique content the site has, how those pages are optimized etc. Studying the backlinks will give you one piece of the information but there is more to it than that.

A site ranks #1 for many reasons one of them being the links... then there are many factors for eg. the content the sites linking to you... is their content related to you...etc...etc

Well don't bother about those factors and keep seo simple and do what you know to do... Build a spider friendly site and then start building links
