An Outsider's View of Directories

I'm not a directory owner and don't plan to ever become one. But every few months I go on a short "link-building campaign" for my two sites, and submitting to directories is usually a big part of it. I appreciate the opportunity for acquiring links that directories provide, and also appreciate the hard work and time that owners give to creating directories and reviewing sites. Thank you!

But I would like to point out a few annoyances that I consistently encounter when making submittions. Please take this as constructive criticsm rather than griping.

    1. On some submission pages the security codes are difficult (or even impossible) to read. I usually give up after the third try.

    2. Some directories have very limited category choices. By this I mean that it's hard (or impossible) to find appropriate categories for my sites. I don't want to submit to an improper category, so I usually leave without submitting.

    3. The submission sofware doesn't work properly. I take time to fill everything in and hit SUBMIT, but it gives a 404 error, or goes awry in some other way.

    4. I've reached the conclusion that a lot of directories "go dormant" at some point. They still allow submissions, but the owner no longer reviews them. In this case he or she should close down the submission process so that people won't waste their time filling in the form.

    Thank you

1 - Now a days simple captcha (image verification) are available..
2 - You can suggest your category to the directory owner..
    3 - Not always
4 - Yes, he should close them..

Well congrats to you! You have found what a true QBC is ;)
Most true to this are in it for the expectations of making a fast buck and nothing more...
as they could care less about their image or their corresponding directory.

though MOST arent.... some sadly are..

    1. Capta or spam prevention is crap....
I tend not to use and would rather spend a few dollars for a mod to prevent spam though it may not stop it 100% ...it does help
Newer directory have fixed these issues in newer releases.

    2. Catagories... When submitting sometimes the best thing to do is submit to the top catagory (when sub cat not available)
and in the description add ( please make me a catagory kind directory owner as your site lacks such) most will after they read the message :)

    3. Submittion Page Errors... contact the webmaster ASAP! if not fixed within a few days
then it probably wont be as they could probably care less and that you will be able to identify
readily fast by looking at the directory in general aspects.

I agree that if they arent worried about it sell it and move on rather then waste your time and others...

I would suggest to you the vilesilencer forum or the directorycritics site as they list directories
and can easily communicate with owners and dont fool around when it comes to the business.. :D

    thx

This is one problem with free directories, the motivation goes in when the directory owner cannot monetize the site and they just gives up on it

Thats totally sucks, i have seen they worst Capta images in some relaibel directories and wonder what the owners are thinking.
But then again it difficult to regulate a directory owners enough to make a favourable change.

People have complained like hell, but some are just plain stubborn

I guess they are just lazy to work out a detailed categorization

That could be a host problem, i have had that problems a few time myself and i guess you could check back later

Keep looking out at my blog, i have a special list coming up very soon

I suggest that you use the directory list from, you can download the excel
    http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock=seo-friendly.php

remember that no list is perfect, but this is definetely the best and the most updated

many directory owners who are part of the active directory scene dont use captcha
it doesnt stop spam an we use other methods now

this is just on your experience of course but i would say that directories with smaller category selections probably are adding categories as content is submitted so they dont have a lot of empt categories around

yea well this is just old sites that noone cares about
what to do..if someone really was paying attention to their site they would wanna fix this
suppose its worse if you submit 10sites and it looks like theyve been accepted but theyll never been reviewed

a lot of the directories out there on older lists will contain directories that webmasters have got bored of or dont have the time for so yea this happens like any other site.
its the perfect solution to close these down but ..human nature an all..
and dont worry you as a submitter arent alone in submitting to these and wasting your time
    we do it too :)

One thing you can do to save a bit of time is to check out the Latest Listed section of a directory. As many folks list the date added - this would give you a clue the last time a site was actually approved and added.

I found one the other day where the last site added was 2005 - needless to say I didn't bother submitting.

Now there are 4 problems you will never find in mine :)

    I have no codes...
I have hundreds of categories... And always willing to add more...
I check my site often and I have never found a 404 yet...
I review all submissions and that wont change... I currently reject about 1/3 of submitted sites. I had one fella get very pissed at me over it too! LOL Life goes on ;)
