Almost all SEO experts suggest that the maximum title length should be <= 170 characters.

My titles have the word and and I'm thinking of converting it to & to minimize the number of chars.

My problem is I'm confused on what to used: & or &

Does & count as only one character?

& only counts as a single character. This is just a special code in HTML language that tells the web browser to display it as a &.

I agree with MrKeh, you shouldn't have any increase in character length by providing an html version of &. I can't think of any reason to use one over the other. And even if it did add characters, I cant imagine 4 characters would make a difference.

    Thanks for the input guys.

I think I was confused and was wrong on my assumption that search engines look for the source code ;)
