Amnesty International says that the torching and looting in ethnic Georgian villages in South Ossetia may be war crimes.

More and more facts are coming out about what happened.

South Ossetia's total population 70,000 before the recent fighting. At most they had a couple thousand militia fighters backed by 2000 or so Russian 'peacekeepers'. Howver prior to the recent fighting thousands of South Russian, Chechen, Cossack and North Ossestian militia were pouring into South Ossetia. There were also a week or so of artillery duels before Georgia moved against South Ossetia and the Russian militias.

It appears that Russia all along was looking to provoke Georgia. The Russians had plenty of forces massed in the area and were looking to teach Georgia a lesson.
