American Starting Copywriting

I'm an American, who obviously speaks English as a native language. I'm looking at getting into copy writing but the rates on DP are so low and not even worth my time. How should I break into the market? Are there other freelance copy writing websites out there that are more worth my time?

    hi mate,
There are a number of threads here about starting as a freelance writer. Please look around.

Regarding the rates, I am afraid most buyers throng DP to look out for dirt cheap writers/rewriters. That, however, doesn't mean that it's not a place for someone like you.
My advice would be to start writing for low rates. Build a portfolio of work. Start a blog to showcase your writing style. It's better than sitting idle. By starting to write, you;d not only earn whatever little you'll, but also earn Itrader and get to learn the dynamics of DP.

Always remember to set your prices to the point where you can make enough money to make it worth your time. If your writing is worth it you will get buyers. If not, then it will become time to re-evaluate your decisions.

Buy a "writers marketplace" book and get into writing articles for magazines. The pay is good and you get return business if they like your style.
Make sure you you check out the magazine first to get aquainted with their style and readership demographic, and take note of their submission guidelines.

    This.

I can't believe how many writers sell their stuff for a pittance compared to what they could get from offline or online magazines among other clients.

You're right, the rates are typically very low on this site; however, quality speaks for itself. My prices start at $39.99 for a 500 word article, and I have been able to find people on here (and many more elsewhere) shrewd enough to realise that this is a bargain.

If you're good enough, trust me, they'll pay.

Start out by building a solid foundation on here and then slowly increase your rates every so often as more and more people hire you. The quality of your writing will speak for itself when you have worked with some people.
