Amazon To Launch Payments Services; Will Compete With PayPal and Google Checkout

Look for a launch announcement by Amazon this week or next of a new web service around payments, adding to their S3 (storage), EC2 (virtual server) and other services. They’ve been quietly testing the service, which will compete with PayPal and Google Checkout, for a few weeks. It is an extension of the existing Amazon Payments, which allows third parties selling items on Amazon’s extended network to receive payments from buyers.

We hear that for now at least this is a redirect service only, like Google Checkout. Users will be redirected to Amazon’s servers to complete the payment and then returned to the original site. PayPal also offers an integrated solution that allows users to remain on the original ecommerce site, an attractive feature for larger partners. The service will also allow sites to use Amazon to manage payments between users, and receive confirmation of transactions. This will be particularly useful for the new crop of online money management services.

PayPal, owned by eBay, still dominates this space, and the spats between them and Google are becoming legendary.

Im hoping this would be available worldwide :D

It is a very interesting article you posted, and it will be exiting to see how this will work and if they can stand the competition from this big guys.

Did a search for amazon payments and didn't see any reviews.

Has anyone used the service? Comments?

I just signed up and waiting to verify my bank account for full access. If yoour average sales are $10 or less this service would be cheaper than the PayPal fee structure.

Hey anything thats comes out too end Paypal's monopoly. Google checkout hasn't been well, able to do that. Stuff like Alertpay arent quality enough and Moneybookers is still trying to get a firm grip in the market. All the best Amazon!

I thought stormpay was going to give paypal a run, but they never took off. I also use 2checkout, but they are expensive when it comes to fees and they hold onto your money a lot longer.

I am hoping my customers adjust okay when i remove paypal as an option. Since amazon has good name recognition I do not think many will hesitate to use the payment option.

Looks interesting, I'm not too surprised to see Amazon stepping into this market, any idea how competitive they'll be with fees?

At the moment they haven't added the option to 'continue shopping', buy more than 1 product. Big downside for me, but hopefully they are working on it.

I was taking a look at this and it lacks in features, but it seems Amazon is really trying to break into everything online these days: Cloud, S3, hosting, and now payment gateways. The first 3 are pretty good now, so I figure they will beef up the payment gateway soon.
