What do you do if you have an extremely limited knowlege of website design/html/php etc but you have a fantastic idea for a website. Is it safe to trust someone to code it for you?

Sure. Just be sure to have them sign a non-compete if you are really worried about them stealing your idea.

I have the exact same problem, a lot of great ideas however hard to put them to use because of a very limited budget and not much coding skills.

You got to trust your coder at least...
Being careful at the time of hiring would be a good idea.
    Bye :)

As in anything in life...don't trust anyone unless you truly know the person. Sad isn't it...but true
If you don't know the person, I agree with stymiee....have them sign some sort of documentation where they acknowledge that they are working for you...

If you are really devoted, you can do some self-study yourself, use applications like macromedia dreamweaver or frontpage for the design, these tools are very easy to use.. but if you don't have time to spare then i guess you need to check the background of your contract designer or something...:D

yes, you can use dreamweaver, first you will find it hard to use, but after a short time, you will learn the html tags you are using, and will be easy for you to edit. Or, learn the basics of HTML.

hire an Indian to code for you. they won't steal your idea and you'll find they are hard working dedicated coders.

See if you can get a patent for your idea, then ask a local developer to do the work for you after signing a no-compete as stymiee suggested. This will significantly reduce the chance of him stealing your idea. :)

You can't use that as a rule. While indians are hard workers, we have a number of them that you can never trust, working in the company i work for. :)

Great suggestions... I can think of good website ideas but cant think of something like making them sign a contract :p Thanks everyone. Now for the matter of finding someone I know that can do what I need... Lol being prom king, my group of friends tend to stay away from being labeled as nerds and wouldnt have a clue as to how to make a website
