I have been doing SEO for sometime now and have recently decided to post every single article i write to five different article directories. The issue is, it is very demanding due to the fact that i am still working on part time basis and have limited time to market my business. In addition, i still utilize other kind of marketing technique. My question is, is there any SEO gain to distribute one article to five other directories manually. Is there a software i can use to ease my job? Thanks.
You get back links out of the submissions you do. There are plenty of automated submission programs. Google them. Most aren't free though.
If you write article for backlinks purposes, you need to have the original one re-written. For example, you write an original article and submit them to Ezine. Then you re-write them twice and submit them to 2 different articles directories like Article base , article city or what not...Make sure they don;t have the "no follow" tag. For what I understand, duplicate content does not count if your doing for SEO purpose.

Yes, article writing and distribution is helpful for both SEO and traffic but must be done at a certain volume for you to feel its impact. Time also matters because it must be done consistently for about six months for the effect to be material. Previously(years back) this volume could be attained manually but these days of web explosion, you need a software to assist. Two of the best are article submission service of submityourarticle.com and Brad Callen's article submitter but they are quite expensive. Submityourarticle costs an average of $50 monthly while article submitter is a one-off fee but i am not too sure of the cost but i think in excess of $100. There is a free version of article submitter but limited in many aspects e.g. number of article directories. Article marketing is a long term marketing technique and not fast techniques such as PPC but it is more longer lasting and enduring.
