Am I missing something?

I'm a bit confused by the fact that when some people sell domans they call them "rare". Now, this confused me because a domain can only be registered once, so how is it rarer than any other domain out there? They all only exist once, so why are some "rare" and others aren't?

Or is it just marketing hype?

Think they mean rare on being a certain quality of domain. Like a 4 letter domain with all premium letters or that is pronouncable. Those are getting rare.

Its not specific to the domain itself, but what type of domain it falls under.

Rare names in my opinion are ones that there aren't too many of available for sale, like LLL.com's, two character domains, etc.

Rare to me would be where you cant find an equivalent, where the sale of a domain type comes up once in a blue moon, where it would demand deep pockets, and one that would genuinely have interested people excited about it.

Ah OK, thanks for the explanations, guys. Just because there is a domain for sale at the moment that is claiming to be "rare" but I really didn't think much of it. I understand the LL/LLL/LLLL.com ones but not entirely sure about the others, so thanks for clearing that up pipes :)
